Selenium and Iodine: The Two Minerals Your Thyroid Actually Needs
Iodine supplies the raw material for thyroid hormone and selenium helps convert and protect it. Food sources, the excess-intake risks, and where to be careful.
Most conversations about thyroid health focus on one nutrient at a time, but the gland itself does not work that way. It needs iodine to build thyroid hormone in the first place, and it needs selenium to convert that hormone into its active form and to keep the manufacturing process from damaging the tissue that does the work. Neither mineral does much good without the other, and — as with most micronutrients — the goal is adequacy, not excess.
A two-part job: build the hormone, then activate and protect it
Think of iodine as the raw material and selenium as the conversion and cleanup crew. The thyroid gland uses iodine, combined with the amino acid tyrosine, to assemble thyroid hormone through an enzyme called thyroid peroxidase. Most of what gets released into the bloodstream is T4, a relatively inactive form. Tissues throughout the body then rely on selenium-dependent enzymes called deiodinases to convert T4 into T3, the form that actually does the metabolic work in cells.
Selenium has a second job in this process. Making thyroid hormone generates hydrogen peroxide as a byproduct, and left unchecked, that can damage thyroid tissue over time. Selenium is a component of glutathione peroxidase and other antioxidant enzymes that help neutralize this byproduct, so it is protecting the gland at the same time it is helping activate the hormone the gland produces.
Iodine: where it comes from
Iodine is not made by the body, so it has to come from diet. Common sources include:
- Iodized salt — historically the main public health fix for iodine deficiency in many countries
- Seaweed — kelp, nori, kombu, and other sea vegetables, though content varies widely and can be very high in some products
- Dairy — milk and cheese often carry meaningful iodine, partly from iodine-based sanitizers used in dairy processing
- Seafood — fish and shellfish generally
- Eggs
People who avoid iodized salt, dairy, and seafood — for whatever reason — are more likely to run low. Iodine needs also rise during pregnancy, since the mineral is essential for fetal brain development, which is one reason prenatal vitamins commonly include it.
Selenium: where it comes from
Selenium content in food tracks the selenium content of the soil it was grown in, which is why it varies more by geography than most minerals. Common sources include:
- Brazil nuts — famously selenium-dense, but with highly variable content per nut
- Seafood — tuna, sardines, shrimp, and other fish and shellfish
- Organ meats, particularly liver
- Eggs
- Sunflower seeds
For most people eating a varied diet with some seafood or occasional nuts, meeting selenium needs from food is not difficult.
Why more is not automatically better
With both of these minerals, the range between “enough” and “too much” is narrower than people tend to assume, and the failure mode is not always a mirror image of the deficiency it is meant to fix.
Selenium and the Brazil nut trap. Because selenium content in Brazil nuts fluctuates so much by soil and growing region, it is genuinely possible to eat what feels like a modest snack and take in far more selenium than intended, especially if it becomes a daily habit rather than an occasional one. Chronic excess selenium intake (sometimes called selenosis) has been associated with symptoms like hair and nail brittleness, gastrointestinal upset, fatigue, and a garlic-like breath odor. This generally takes sustained overconsumption to develop, but it illustrates why “a food is healthy” does not automatically mean “more of it is better.”
Iodine excess and thyroid disruption. Iodine deficiency is the more commonly discussed problem historically, but too much iodine can also interfere with normal thyroid function. The gland has a built-in mechanism that temporarily suppresses hormone production when iodine intake spikes, and in people who already have an autoimmune thyroid condition or nodules, a sudden large increase in iodine — often from concentrated seaweed products or high-dose supplements — has been linked to flares or shifts in thyroid function in some cases. Typical food-based iodine intake rarely causes this; it is concentrated supplements and iodine-heavy seaweed products that warrant more caution.
Getting the balance from food rather than guesswork
A reasonable, low-drama approach looks less like precision dosing and more like a varied plate:
- Use iodized salt if you use salt, and do not assume all salt (like most sea salt or kosher salt) is iodized — check the label
- Include seafood or dairy a few times a week if your diet allows it
- Treat Brazil nuts and concentrated seaweed products (like kelp tablets or seaweed snacks eaten daily) as occasional additions rather than everyday staples
- Favor whole foods over high-dose iodine or selenium supplements unless a clinician has identified a specific reason to use one
When to loop in a clinician
Some situations call for professional guidance rather than general dietary reasoning:
- A diagnosed thyroid condition — Hashimoto’s, Graves’ disease, nodules, or a history of thyroid cancer — where iodine and selenium intake can meaningfully interact with your treatment
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding, when iodine needs increase and both under- and over-supplementation carry considerations for fetal development
- Considering a kelp, iodine, or selenium supplement, since these are among the easier nutrients to unintentionally over-supplement
- Symptoms that could suggest thyroid dysfunction — unexplained fatigue, weight changes, temperature sensitivity, or hair thinning — which deserve bloodwork rather than a mineral guess
